Cardiovascular outcomes and safety associated with statin therapy for primary prevention in older adults with type 2 diabetes

Target trial emulation using Hong Kong electronic health records: adults with type 2 diabetes, LDL-C ≥2.6 mmol/L, and no prior cardiovascular disease. Statin initiation was associated with fewer cardiovascular events and lower all-cause mortality in those aged 75–84 and 85 and over, without excess muscle-related or liver events.

Diagnostic accuracy of computed tomography in patients with non-specific symptoms of cancer referred directly from general practice

This Danish study assessed cancer prevalence and use of contrast-enhanced CT of the thorax, abdomen and pelvis for non-specific symptoms referred from general practice. Referrals rose five-fold from 2012–2019. Cancer was found in 13% of patients. Twelve false negatives gave LR 0.15, so CT alone shouldn’t guide decisions.

BMJ· 5 August 2026

Comparative effects of drugs for adults with overweight or obesity

Randomised trial compared obesity drugs against lifestyle, placebo or other agents over 12 weeks. Tirzepatide produced the greatest mean weight loss (14.9%), narrowly ahead of CagriSema (14.8%); oral semaglutide (10.9%), orforglipron (9.9%), injectable semaglutide (9.8%) and phentermine-topiramate (8.1%) followed. Larger losses were accompanied by more harms, discontinuation, and little quality-of-life gain overall.

State of Child Health 2026

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health's updated State of Child Health report finds children's health across the UK worsening or stalled against most of its 12 indicators, hitting deprived communities hardest. Primary-care-relevant metrics include two-dose MMR coverage at 84% by age five, below the 95% target, alongside rising childhood obesity and worsening mental health.

Lancet· 23 July 2026

GLP-1 receptor agonists and binge eating disorder

GLP-1 receptor agonists, licensed for obesity and type 2 diabetes but not for eating disorders, are being investigated in binge eating disorder. A large evidence review found their use associated with lower binge-eating severity and reduced loss of control around food in adults with obesity. Long-term benefit remains uncertain, and reviewers flagged a possible increase in dietary restraint.
